How to Pray the Scriptures

Updated: Apr 9

Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian faith, serving as a conduit for communication with God. One profound method to deepen this communication is by praying the Scriptures—using God's Word as the foundation and language of our prayers. This practice aligns our hearts with God's will, enriches our prayer life, and ensures that our petitions are rooted in divine truth. This article will guide you through the process of praying the Scriptures, offering practical steps and insights to help you incorporate this transformative practice into your daily life.

My Journey to Praying the Scriptures

I remember a season in my life when I struggled with prayer. I felt like I was repeating the same words every day, and my prayers seemed powerless. I would cry out to God, but I often wondered if He was really listening. Then, one day, I stumbled upon Jeremiah 1:12, which says, "I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled." This verse changed everything. It made me realize that God's promises are sure, and when I pray His Word, I am speaking the very things He has already said He will do.

I decided to put this into practice. Instead of just saying, "Lord, please provide for me," I began praying Philippians 4:19, "My God will supply all my needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Slowly, I noticed a shift—not only in my prayers but also in my faith. I was no longer just asking God to do something; I was declaring His promises over my life with confidence.

That journey taught me the power of praying the Scriptures. It gave my prayer life depth, assurance, and effectiveness, and I want to share that with you.

Why Should You Pray the Scriptures?

Praying the Scriptures is more than just reading the Bible during prayer—it is an intentional act of aligning your prayers with God’s will. Here are some key benefits:

1. It Aligns Your Prayers with God’s Will

Many believers struggle with whether they are praying in alignment with God's will. However, when we pray the Word, we can be assured that we are praying in agreement with His heart. 1 John 5:14-15 states, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."

For example, if you are praying for wisdom, you can confidently pray James 1:5, which promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

2. It Strengthens Your Faith

The Bible tells us that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). When we pray Scripture, we are constantly speaking and hearing the truth of God's Word, which strengthens our faith. Instead of praying with doubt, we begin praying with certainty, knowing that God is faithful to His promises.

3. It Helps You Overcome Spiritual Warfare

There are times when we face spiritual battles that feel overwhelming. The enemy attacks our minds with fear, anxiety, and doubt. However, Jesus Himself showed us how to fight back—by using Scripture. When He was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He didn't argue or use His own words; He responded with, "It is written…" (Matthew 4:4).

Ephesians 6:17 calls the Word of God "the sword of the Spirit." When we pray Scripture, we are wielding a spiritual weapon that defeats the enemy.

4. It Brings Peace and Assurance

Life is full of uncertainty, but God's Word remains steadfast. Praying the Scriptures helps anchor our hearts in peace. When fear tries to overwhelm you, praying Isaiah 41:10"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God."—reminds you that God is always near.

Types of Prayers Using Scripture

1. Prayers of Adoration (Worship)

Adoration is a form of prayer that focuses on praising and worshiping God for who He is. This kind of prayer is not about asking for anything but simply recognizing God's greatness, holiness, and majesty.

  • Example of Adoration Prayer Using Scripture:

    • Psalm 100:4: "Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name."

    • Prayer: "Lord, I worship You today. You are holy, righteous, and mighty. I praise You because You are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I enter into Your presence with thanksgiving and give You all the glory."

2. Prayers of Confession (Repentance)

Confession is an important part of prayer where we acknowledge our sins before God and seek His forgiveness. The Bible tells us that when we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us.

  • Example of Confession Prayer Using Scripture:

    • 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

    • Prayer: "Lord, I confess my sins before You today. I acknowledge where I have fallen short. Your Word says that if I confess, You are faithful to forgive. I receive Your forgiveness and cleansing now."

3. Prayers of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a form of prayer where we express gratitude to God for His blessings, provision, and faithfulness. It is a way to acknowledge that all good things come from Him.

  • Example of Thanksgiving Prayer Using Scripture:

    • 1 Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

    • Prayer: "Father, I thank You for Your love, Your provision, and Your protection. Even in difficult times, I will give thanks because I trust in Your perfect plan."

4. Prayers of Supplication (Requests and Intercession)

Supplication is when we present our needs before God or intercede on behalf of others. The Bible encourages us to bring our requests before Him with confidence.

  • Example of Supplication Prayer Using Scripture:

    • Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

    • Prayer: "Lord, I bring my needs before You. Your Word says I should not be anxious, so I surrender my worries to You. Please provide for me, guide me, and grant me peace in every area of my life."
